Safety tips while travelling to Nigeria

A great place to experience the diversity, Nigeria stretches from the ancient Islamic cities of the Sahel in the north to the steamy rivers of the Niger Delta. It has over 250 different ethnic groups within its borders.

About the country, it is often heard that Nigeria is notorious, especially the border areas and the northern states because of sectarian violence. Thus, many governments from West have issued warnings to their citizens and have suggested to avoid travel to certain parts of the country.

1. It is highly advisable to accompany any friend from Nigeria and if possible, stay with a Nigerian friend if you wish to enjoy Nigeria to its fullest.

2. Carrying a lot of cash or jewelry might put you in a difficult situation, so leave your cash at home while travelling to Nigeria.

3. Do not move out after 10 pm as that is the time when most armed attacks happens on the roads of Nigeria.

4. Before leaving your room/apartment/house, lock all the windows and doors properly.

5. Homosexuality is a punishable offense in Nigeria.
